Review: NorthShore Supreme Briefs

Long story short: In an earlier post, I said I was looking at trying some new premium plastic-backed diapers soon, possibly NorthShore Supremes. Then I posted a comment on that post saying I’d changed my mind. Then I changed my mind back and bought some. I did go with the Supremes. Now I’m going to review them. . . .

The NorthShore Supreme, in my eyes, is like a cheap version of the Abena M4—which is ironic because the Supreme is quite a bit more expensive. To be precise, I got a pack of 14 Abena M4s in January for about $18 and a pack of NorthShore Supremes recently for about $27.

I have been very disappointed with the Supremes ever since I first opened the pack I bought. The first thing about them that disappointed me was that they have these hard, sand-like bumps on them in random places. I’ve seen these on brand new diapers before, but not so many of them. I’m guessing it’s some issue with the padding. It’s not that big of a deal, but it is aesthetically displeasing, so it gave me an early burst of disappointment.

For another thing, the briefs are quite thin. At least, they’re thinner than I expected. And, probably partially for that reason, they act quite like super-thin MoliCare Super Pluses do when I first put them on: they stay pretty far from my skin. That’s not a characteristic I like in my diapers.

Review: YERO Sling Bag

You may remember from this previous post that I was eyeing a sling bag (small one-strap backpack) on Amazon that I hoped could work as a diaper bag. I normally use a drawstring bag as a diaper bag if I need or want one separate from my backpack. It’s a good system, but I thought a sling bag might have some advantages over a drawstring bag. For example, I thought a sling bag might be more discreet, more equipped to hold other items I don’t like to keep in my pockets, and easier to hang on a hook in a bathroom stall.

As I anticipated, I did eventually buy the bag I was eyeing. It comes from the brand YERO and is part of the product series Local Lion. You can find it on Amazon if you search “YERO sling bag.” I got the brown version.

I Got New Wipes!

Wipes are the only diaper accessory I’ve ever bought, and they’ve been worth it. Believe it or not, though, I’ve only ever bought wipes 3 times!

The first time I bought wipes, I got baby wipes from Walgreens. They were cheap and high-quality, but I can’t remember the brand name or anything. The second time I bought wipes, it was on Amazon, after much internal debate about which ones to get. In retrospect, despite all my deliberation, I was probably too inexperienced with wipes to buy online; the ones I got were bad.

I remember some of the reasons I got them. They were from a brand I’d heard of, they were marketed for adults, they seemed reasonably-priced, and they came in a large enough quantity (a box of 8 packs) that they would count toward free shipping and mean I wouldn’t have to buy more for a while.

But, oh, the frustration they caused me. They were significantly smaller than the baby wipes I’d gotten before (BABY wipes, yes, BABY wipes were larger than these), they constantly ripped when I was taking them out of the pack or—worse—during use, they were difficult to wipe with, they were significantly less comfortable than my previous wipes, and the pack wouldn’t stay open when I needed it to.

Working through so many packs of them, I began to wonder if I’d only imagined the positive experience I’d had with my first wipes.

My New Favorite Diaper

If you’ve read my Diaper Ranking post, you may recall that I listed the MoliCare Super Plus as my #1 favorite diaper, but the Prevail Air as a close #2. There were two reasons I ranked the Prevail below the MoliCare: (1) I was only on my first-ever pack of the Prevail and (2) the MoliCare has leak guards while the Prevail doesn’t.

Last night, I decided to wear a MoliCare Super Plus to bed. I hadn’t worn one for weeks, maybe months. Almost immediately after I put it on, I realized it wasn’t my #1 favorite diaper anymore. Since then, I have only become more certain of that realization.

Here’s how the Prevail Air beats the MoliCare in my mind:

Do Diapers Require Accessories?

I know that many people who are interested in diapers but have never worn them, as well as many people giving advice to those people, believe diapers require accessories such as powders, creams, wipes, inserts, and plastic pants.

I’d like to shatter this myth. While there are some diaper accessories I would recommend, none are necessary.

For anyone reading this who has never tried a diaper but wants to, I’d advise you to just buy diapers at first. That’s what I did. I’d imagined diapers as being great, but I wanted to buy some to make sure. And if I’d bought accessories and not liked the diapers, the accessories would’ve meant more money lost on top of the money I’d spent on the diapers.

Worst. Diaper. Ever.

Okay, so the title of this post sounds super dramatic, but I’m not gonna “go off” on this diaper. I get why it was made and that there are probably a small number of fans of it. So, this is just a calm account of the worst diaper I ever used: Always Discreet Underwear.

I vaguely remember why I bought a pack. I was in high school, and still buying exclusively from drugstores. I’d tried most drugstore diapers already, at least all the ones that seemed like they might be good. So, I was looking to expand my experience to diapers that looked bad but might be hidden gems. Also, I was always looking for cheap diapers, and this fit the bill (I think it was actually on sale). If it were a hidden gem and inexpensive, that would be awesome. My third reason was because it’s marketed for females, and when buying a pack I wouldn’t be suspected as the user. I wasn’t in the mood for a stressful diaper-buying experience.

I won’t lie. I was genuinely excited when I got out to my car with the pack of Always Discreet. I think I always get excited, no matter what diaper I’ve bought in store or ordered online. And this time, for some reason, my excitement led me to open the pack and put one on right then and there, in my car.

The Best Drugstore Diaper

When I first started wearing diapers, all I had access to were what I call drugstore diapers. I’m talking about the ones you can buy in America at drugstore chains like CVS and Walgreens. This category also includes the diapers you can buy at grocery stores and dollar stores.

I did a lot of hunting around these stores and their websites in my early years of self-diapering, trying to find the best diaper for the best price. I was a broke teenager when I started, after all. I want to share my findings, in case you’re in a similar situation as I was, where I couldn’t order online and had little money.
